This website was created in November of 2007 and since then has introduced many people to manatees, a few of which were unaware of this gentle mammal's existence. That has to change, because manatees are in extreme danger. Several hundred of already dwindling populations of manatees are killed each year when they are struck and killed by boaters. In addition to fatal boat strikes, manatees were also hunted nearly to extinction by native Carribbean tribes, and sailors. Even after they were deemed endangered by the US government, they were hunted for food during the rough times surrounding the Great Depression.
